No longer whinging Poms???:-)

I never thought that the day would come when someone from England would be calling Australians whingers…but it seems it has. And I have to agree. Here we are getting all wound up about a Carbon Tax that we know nothing about… a fault of the Government I agree…when surely we should be waiting to see what it actually involves before we get too excited. And even if it does cost us something surely we must be prepared to pay something to provide a good future for our kids. Even the fact that the science is not 100% conclusive, though it seems pretty conclusive to me, should not stop us….I am about to pay $250 to protect a car worth $2000 against a series of events that are statistically less likely than climate change.

In the interests of fairness I’m going to declare my hand here…I think that climate change is real and that we are having something to do with it. Even John Christy, the climate scientist who is the poster child of the climate skeptics, admits that “It is scientifically inconceivable that after changing forests into cities, turning millions of acres into farmland, putting massive quantities of soot and dust into the atmosphere and sending quantities of greenhouse gases into the air, that the natural course of climate change hasn’t been increased in the past century.” And the fact that there are scientist who have a dissenting opinion shouldn’t really change anything. I don’t understand why people feel there is a need for total agreement on this when there is probably not a single scientific principle that scientists are in total agreement about. If you have a quick search of the net you will find that there is actually a wide spread of opinions on the effectiveness of chemotherapy in treating cancer but how many people are going to turn it down as a treatment?

And as for the ‘well yes, I agree that there is a problem but why should we act when no-one else is?’ argument…it just isn’t true. Even the US, who many would believe to be more skeptical than us, has carbon trading in place or going into place, in 13 states covering a total of 50 million people.

I have no problem with debate and I understand totally people will have concerns with a Carbon Tax, it is a big reform. Lets just base the argument on fact is alls I’m saying! 🙂
