Well folks, what do you say when the you realise that your species has reached the peak of its decadence and that surely it is only a heartbeat away from total global destruction with the associated post-apocalyptic Mad Max-ish society and landscape? Okay, so maybe just a tad of exaggeration (my mother told me a billion times never to exaggerate…geez I crack myself up! 🙂 ) but a friend told me a story the other day that suggests we aren’t that far away.
You see, her neighbours were moving and had got a skip to dump a load of junk they didn’t want to take into. My friend had a nosey and noticed a near new double mattress on the top of the pile. So she asked her friend…it was a month old! They couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of taking it with them…okay, they are moving to Queensland so can maybe see their argument. But what about a charity? Nope, couldn’t be bothered with that either! So my friend decided to take the mattress….she has been promising her daughter a double bed, so half that problem solved. But then full problem solved…as my friend was lifting the mattress off she noticed a big box in the skip under it…brand new double bed, box not even opened!
Seriously, have we really reached a point where ordinary, everyday folk can just throw a brand new double bed and mattress into a skip because they can’t be bothered moving it with them…or contacting a charity to take it?
Btw, should you ever find yourself in this sticky situation try Freecycle… to quote the site ‘it’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills’. You’ll be amazed the things that you don’t need but that others are happy to take off your hands.
